Storm Watch at Long Beach

Storm-watching at Long Beach is a breathtaking way to experience the power of nature. Bundle up and head to Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, where the waves crash against an endless sandy shoreline and the skies shift dramatically by the minute. It’s a humbling and awe-inspiring coastal experience, especially from one of the beachside lookout points. Pay parking is now required at all the beach access points within the National Park.

Rent Bikes and Ride the Boardwalks, Trails — and the Beach!

Exploring by bike is a great way to cover more ground while keeping everyone active. Rent wheels from Tofino Bike Co. or Ukee Bikes and ride the multi-use path which stretches from Tofino to Ucluelet and stop at your favourite beaches along the way. For a fun and unique experience, visit Cox Bay at low tide and ride your bikes directly on the hard-packed sand with the waves rolling beside you. Bike rentals are also available at Pacific Sands.

Hike the Wild Pacific Trail

The Wild Pacific Trail in Ucluelet is a must-do, even with little legs in tow. Choose from the Lighthouse Loop, which is stroller-friendly and under 3 km, or explore a section of the rainforest trail for sweeping views and salty sea air. The Artist’s Loop is a family favourite and pictured below.

Indulge in a Family Feast at Shelter Restaurant

Tofino’s Shelter Restaurant is a long-time local favourite with cozy vibes and a kid-friendly menu. Enjoy local seafood, warm pastas, and delicious desserts while watching the rain fall outside. It was so sunny on our last visit that we all needed sunglasses inside. The panoramic views from the restaurant are almost as good as their food.

Surfing Lessons or Beach Day at Cox Bay

Give surfing a try or simply play along the beach at Cox Bay. Several local surf schools like Tofino Surf Adventures offer beginner lessons that are safe, fun, and tailored to families. If surfing isn’t on your list, Cox Bay is also perfect for beachcombing, building driftwood forts, or watching the action from the sand.

Visit the Ucluelet Aquarium

The Ucluelet Aquarium is a hands-on and educational stop for curious kids. Open March through November, this unique collect-and-release aquarium lets children get up close with marine life from local waters—think sea stars, crab, urchins, and more. Touch tanks, knowledgeable staff, and a welcoming space make it a great rainy-day option for the family.

Shop Local at the Tofino Market

If you’re lucky to visit during a market weekend, the Tofino Artisan Market is a fun stop for families. Shop local goods, meet artists and makers, and pick up handmade keepsakes to remember your time on the coast. Runs Saturdays from 10 am to 2 pm from the May long weekend to Thanksgiving.

Walk the Rainforest Trail

Walk among giants on the Rainforest Trail in Pacific Rim National Park Reserve. Wooden boardwalks and interpretive signs guide you through ancient forests filled with moss, ferns, and towering trees. It’s an easy walk for all ages.

Grab Donuts and Coffee at Rhino

Make a sweet stop at Rhino Coffee House in Tofino for donuts, hot chocolate, and great coffee for the grown-ups. Whether you’re grabbing breakfast before a hike or warming up after a beach stroll, it’s a local favourite for good reason.

Spot Wildlife from the Shore

Wildlife watching from shore is always a thrill. Bring binoculars and head to lookouts like Amphitrite Lighthouse or Florencia Bay, where you may spot sea lions, grey whales, bald eagles, and even otters. No boat required—just a little patience and a good view. If you are visiting the region in March, be sure and check out the Pacific Rim Whale Festival, which happens annually during spring break and has lots of free family activities.

Take a Scenic Drive Between Tofino and Ucluelet

The drive between Tofino and Ucluelet is packed with scenic pullouts and hidden gems. Take your time and stop at Combers Beach, Radar Hill, or the Kwisitis Visitor Centre to learn about coastal ecology and Indigenous culture while soaking in ocean views. Tonquin Beach is another must visit spot with a short boardwalk hike into a sandy cove.

Watch the Sunset at Chesterman Beach or Pettinger Point

Sunsets on the West Coast are truly something special. End your day at Chesterman Beach, where the sky lights up in vibrant colour as the waves roll in. For a quieter and equally stunning spot, follow the Sunset Trail to Pettinger Point from Pacific Sands. This short walk through coastal forest opens up to panoramic views over the Pacific—perfect for a family photo.

Whether you’re surfing, storm-watching, or spotting sand dollars, these two West Coast towns invite you to breathe deeper, explore, and enjoy the simplicity of being together outdoors. Check out our guide to road trips to help plan your next getaway.
