Spring Break in BC: 8 Easy and Amazing Local Getaways to Check-Out

Spring break is just around the corner, and with many families choosing to stay local this year, British Columbia offers an abundance of incredible destinations for a memorable family getaway that you don’t have to plan way in advance. Whether you’re seeking outdoor adventures, new experiences, or relaxing escapes, BC has it all. Here are my top spring break destinations in BC for families.

Whistler

Whistler is a year-round playground for families. In spring, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—skiing and snowboarding on the mountain in the morning and exploring the village or hiking in the afternoon. Family-friendly activities include the Peak 2 Peak Gondala, the Train Wreck hike, mountain biking and the Audain Art Museum. Don’t forget to check out the family après events in Whistler Village! Spring skiing in Whistler is particularly appealing, with sunny days and a lively atmosphere. For more details on what to do in Whistler, see my posts on planning your trip, what to do and where to eat while you are there.

Vancouver Island

Vancouver Island offers diverse spring break options. Plan a visit to Victoria for its family-friendly attractions such as the Royal BC Museum, Malahat Skywalk, and Beacon Hill Park.

Head to Parksville and Qualicum Beach for beachcombing, mini-golf, and a great community playground, stop by Coombs and visit the goats on the roof. Tofino is perfect for adventurous families looking to try surfing, explore tide pools, or check out the Pacific Rim Whale Festival. My final island favourite is Port Renfrew where you can find lots of outdoor activities: enjoy the beach, surf, hike and relax by the ocean.

Okanagan Valley

The Okanagan is not just a summer destination. Spring break is a fantastic time to explore Kelowna, Penticton, Vernon, and Osoyoos. Families can enjoy biking along the Kettle Valley Rail Trail, visiting Kangaroo Creek Farm, or exploring the Okanagan Science Centre. Many wineries also offer family-friendly experiences, with picnic areas and outdoor activities. Skiing enthusiasts can also enjoy spring conditions at nearby mountain resorts.

Sunshine Coast

For a more relaxed spring break, the Sunshine Coast offers stunning scenery and a slower pace. Take the ferry to Gibsons or Sechelt, explore coastal hikes, visit the Sunshine Coast Museum, or spend a day at Porpoise Bay Provincial Park. The area’s artisan culture also means plenty of galleries and local shops to explore. This is the only one on my list we haven’t yet visited and I’m hoping we get a chance to visit this year.

Kootenay Rockies

For families who love the outdoors, the Kootenay Rockies offer adventure and natural beauty. Head to places like Nelson, Fernie, or Revelstoke for skiing, hot springs, and exploring quaint mountain towns. The Ainsworth Hot Springs (my favourite BC hot springs) and the natural Lussier Hot Springs are always a hit with kids. Spring skiing is a must for snow-loving families.

Harrison Hot Springs

Harrison Hot Springs is ideal for a spring break focused on relaxation. The resort’s hot pools are perfect for unwinding, while nearby activities include exploring Sasquatch Provincial Park, strolling along the Harrison Lagoon, and renting bikes. Be sure to read my guide to Harrison Hot Springs for more tips on making the most of your visit.

Gulf Islands

The Gulf Islands, including Salt Spring Island and Pender Island, provide a perfect blend of outdoor activities and relaxation. Families can enjoy beachcombing, hiking, and visiting local markets. The islands’ natural beauty and laid-back vibe make them a great choice for spring break. For more details on planning a trip to Pender Island, check out our favourites.

Vancouver

If you are looking for a big city getaway, Vancouver offers endless family activities. Spend spring break visiting the Vancouver Aquarium, Science World, or Flyover Canada. Stanley Park, with its seawall, playgrounds, and Vancouver Aquarium, is always a hit with kids. Grouse Mountain also offers spring skiing and fun activities like the Skyride and wildlife refuge. Take in the cherry blossoms and enjoy this foodie city. Check out my posts on a 7-day Vancouver itinerary and the top attractions you don’t want to miss.
