Reconnect in Nature: A Mother-Daughter Weekend in the Woods

There’s something peaceful about stepping away from everyday life and into the quiet of the forest: tall trees, birds singing, and the kind of quiet that untangles the knots in your shoulders. That’s exactly the kind of experience we set out to have on our mother-daughter weekend in Sooke, BC. What we found was far more; it was a chance to reconnect through simple pleasures: reading, art, and our favourite treats.

Our Treehouse Home Among the Cedars

From the moment we pulled up to The Owls Perch Treehouse — the airy, treetop rental perched high among ancient cedars — we knew this wasn’t going to be just any weekend getaway. This enchanting treehouse feels less like traditional lodging and more like a dream you can live in for a couple of nights. The structure, built among the towering trees, which swayed gently with the breeze, as if breathing with the forest itself. This was our first time staying in a treehouse, and it has long been on our list.

Nearly 30 feet above the forest floor, the treehouse welcomes you with a large deck that frames serene views of the treetops. Situated on a quiet street, the treehouse is incredibly private. Inside, the vibe is cozy yet refined. A loveseat sits beside an inviting fireplace, perfect for reading into the evening. A compact kitchen met our needs (we brought charcuterie and snacks), a small bathroom, and a loft bed perched under a wide picture window, perfect for drawing, made it nearly impossible not to wake up to the sound of birds and sunlight filtering through the leaves.

Why We Chose Sooke

Just a short drive from Victoria, Sooke is a great destination for nature lovers who crave coastal forest trails, ocean views, and local charm. It’s one of our favourite places to enjoy the beach, hike, or visit a local restaurant. This weekend wasn’t about ticking off adventures; it was about being and experiencing something new together. There are several interesting treehouse rentals throughout Vancouver Island to explore; however, they often only sleep two people, making it a perfect option for a mother-daughter weekend.

Day 1: Arrival and Unwinding

We arrived in the early afternoon, after a stop on the way at the bookstore to pick up a new book. After unpacking, we settled in with a cup of tea, snacks and our books. Emma headed to the loft to paint with her travel water colours until sunset, and I enjoyed my new book. We ate a simple charcuterie dinner, played cards, and read some more before heading to sleep in the loft.

Day 2: Slow Morning and Shirley Delicious

We woke up under the loft’s picture window to a sunny morning and enjoyed a quiet start to the day until check-out. We headed for a late breakfast at our favourite local spot and shared breakfast at Shirley Delicious (IYKYK) before making our way home.

Unplugging Together

What made this weekend truly special wasn’t the destination; it was the pause that it gave us, no plans, just a quiet space to be. In a world that’s always pulling our attention in a dozen directions, the shared quiet of a treehouse high in the trees, our books, art supplies, and good food gave us time to just be. For anyone looking for a unique mother-daughter weekend, the Sooke treehouse delivers.
