Good Eats Vancouver, Canada: A Feast for the Family

Whenever we head to Vancouver we tend to have a few specific food groups in mind. Our family loves sushi and our favourite sushi spots are in Vancouver. Next we love a good bakery and Vancouver has lots of great options to choose from. Finally, if you read our posts you know how much we love gelato. Many of our favourite ice cream and gelato spots are here. I promise we still eat lots of veggies and salad when we visit but we are going to share a few of our favourite places to eat in Vancouver.

A Few Vancouver Favourites

Sushi

  • Shizenya – this is our favourite sushi restaurant (and we have tried a lot of sushi). We have been to both of their Vancouver locations and keep coming back every time we visit. They are now located on Hornby in downtown Vancouver. It’s a great spot for a date night, a family dinner or a picnic on the go. Why we love it-it isn’t fancy or expensive but it tastes great. I also love that all their sushi is made from organic brown rice-yum.
  • Awesome Sushi, is as good as the name suggests. A small sushi restaurant located in Port Coquitlam with great service.
  • Sushi U, in Coquitlam is another good spot for lunch on the go.

Bakeries

  • Beyond Bread – we have been trying to get to Beyond Bread on our last couple of visits to Vancouver and it didn’t disappoint when we finally made it. We tried their croissants, pretzels, scones and bread and everyone left very happy.
  • Breka – with locations all over Vancouver, we always seem to find our way to Breka on each of our visits to Vancouver. We like their smoothies, juice and all of their baked goodies that we’ve tried. Best of all they are open 24 hours.
  • Purebread Bakery – with several locations across Vancouver and Whistler, this is a great spot for a treat or a lunch on the go.
  • Honey’s is a great place to stop for a donut or sandwich for lunch when you are in Deep Cove.

Ice Cream and Gelato (a food group on it’s own)

  • Vashti Rose – hands down our favourite place for ice cream, they have a huge menu of traditional ice cream and an equally great line up of vegan options made from cashew milk. Prices are very reasonable and they let you sample a new flavour by adding a taster on top of your ice cream. The vegan raspberry chocolate is my favourite.
  • Rocky Point Ice Cream – located in Port Moody in a couple of different locations, they have great home-made ice cream and a few plant based options that rotate. The raspberry mojito was fantastic. They even have ice cream for your dog. Check them out in Rocky Point Park.
  • Bella Gelateria – we visited their English Bay location and tried a couple of different types of gelato between our small group. The burnt caramel was my favourite.

Dinner Out

  • Steam Works – this is a great place for dinner on the patio in Gastown. If you are looking for a view of the harbour, ask for a seat inside. We had dinner with the family and everyone loved their meals and drinks.
  • Nightengale – this is a favourite spot for a date night without the kids, although I am sure they would enjoy it as well. Located near the waterfront in downtown on West Hastings.
  • Joey Bentall – another great spot for lunch or dinner, amazing salads. Located downtown on Burrard.

Richmond Night Market

If you are looking for a fun night out with the family, be sure to check out the Richmond Night Market. Open Friday through Sunday starting at 7pm from April to October. It’s $8.50 per person to enter, seniors and children under seven are free. Or you can buy a zoom pass to skip the line for $40 (5 entries that can be shared with your family). Get there early as the lines get long and enjoy dinner and live music and shows. Parking on site is free. There are carnival games and a market to browse after you eat but head to the food first.

We each picked something we wanted to try and share and the kids both got a drink. We were so full that we weren’t even able to try a dessert, maybe next time. Most foods ranged from $8-$13 each and vendors only accept cash.

We tried the:

  • Sushi Hot Dog: Yam Roll (F24)
  • The Bank of Canaday: Mozzarella Cheese Coin (F5)
  • Mango Sticky Rice (F50)
  • Rotato (F22)
  • Unco Coco: Coconut Slush Splash (F40)
  • Lemonade

Our favourites were the mango sticky rice, sushi hot dog, and the rotato (spiral potato). For more on the Richmond Night Market and other top experiences in Vancouver, see this post.
