The Splurge

In each of the cities we visited, we found one restaurant that we wanted to try out, it was our splurge dinner. We looked for places with great food, great ambiance, and a menu that appealed to everyone including the sometimes-picky kids. In London, this was Ave Mario and it didn’t disappoint, we enjoyed an Italian dinner in Covent Garden on our Theatre night out. The food and service were fantastic but even better was the restaurant itself, every room was styled differently with a retro vibe. Be sure to check out the bathrooms if you visit, they are just as amazing as the rest of the place. You will need a reservation as it’s popular, you can make these online one month in advance.

Food Tours

Food tours are a great way to get to experience a new place and have become quite popular, unfortunately, they can be quite expensive for a family. Before our trip a friend shared her favourite food blog – Preppy Kitchen with us, and we picked a couple of spots in each of the cities we were visiting to check out. This was a fun way to try something a bit different for a treat. In London, we visited the Seven Dials Market and had the best waffles at Deekenek

A Few Favourites

  • Gail’s Bakery in Windsor: we liked it so much we visited it twice; we had a snack one day and stopped in on our way out of town for some breakfast goodies.
  • The King and Castle Pub in Windsor: right across the street with a great view of Windsor Castle, they had great pub food, drinks, and prices; we even tried the mushy peas.
  • Two Brewers Pub is fantastic, established in 1792 it’s one of the smallest pubs in Windsor with just nine tables inside. It is located next to the Park Street Gate and the entrance to the long walk. Note it is adult-only.
  • Pret A Manger in London near the Borough Market, which happened to be closed on Mondays oops, this was a great on-the-go lunch spot with something for everyone, try the bacon mac and cheese. We took our lunch to go and found benches outside before our picnic was interrupted by a rainstorm.
  • Ave Mario in London was our favourite dinner out with great service, fun drinks, large helpings of our favourite Italian dishes and a fun atmosphere.

What’s in the grocery store?

Whenever we visit somewhere new, we love to check out the grocery store and see how it differs from our options at home. We tried a few spots in Windsor, the Tesco Express, Waitrose, and Marks and Spencer, where of course we bumped into fellow Canadians from back home, I know right, what are the odds?

Our favourite spot was Waitrose for our big grocery shop, with lots of selection and the best prices by far. It is also where we happened upon our new favourite chocolate: Tony’s Chocolonely (the milk caramel sea salt is AMAZING, so much so we had to order some when we got home since we weren’t able to find it again on our holiday after leaving England). I am seriously considering a stop in Amsterdam when we go back to Europe just for this chocolate. We also loved the ready-made meals at M&S and picked these up for a quick dinner or picnic.
