Good Eats on Crete, Greece: A Feast for the Family

Indulge in the culinary delights of Crete, Greece as we take you on a journey through the island’s family friendly eateries and hidden gems.

The Splurge

In each of the cities we visited, we found one restaurant that we wanted to try out, it was our splurge dinner. We looked for places with great food, great ambiance, and a menu that appealed to everyone including the sometimes-picky kids. In Crete, this was Veneto and it was beautiful. We loved the Cretan cuisine and most of all the beauty of the building, with its many different rooms and spaces to eat. You can make reservations in advance online if you want to guarantee a specific date and time.

A Few Favourites

  • Veneto in Rethymno was our favourite dinner out with delicious food, great service, and the most stunning location.
  • Taverna Mylonas in Roussospiti was a great family restaurant. We ate here twice as the menu was diverse and had something for everyone. Prices were incredibly reasonable for both food and drinks.
  • Taverna Vamvakas in Roussospiti was a great find as we stumbled upon it looking for dessert and instead found a special night with live music and dancers, certainly something I won’t soon forget.
  • Gaias Geyseis in Rethymno was a great bakery. Their name translates to earthly flavours, and they had a little bit of everything including fantastic Greek pastries.
  • Taverna Gefyra Preveli on our way back from Preveli this was a pretty spot for an outdoor lunch.
  • Bistro Café in Argiroupoli, we stopped here for coffee and brunch. In a town famous for avocados, we had to try the avocado toast-yum.
  • Authentico for ice cream and gelato in Chania.

What’s in the grocery store?

Whenever we visit somewhere new, we love to check out the grocery store and see how it differs from our options at home. In Rethymno, we liked SYN KA Supermarket as it was large, had free parking, and had good prices.

We had a few favourites that came from Crete. Oregano potato chips were fantastic, I wish they sold them at home. Gazzoza was another family favourite, this cream-soda-flavoured pop is local to Crete and can be found everywhere.
