Good Eats Athens, Greece: A Feast for the Family

Indulge in the street food of Athens, Greece as we take you on a journey through the family friendly eateries and hidden gems.

The Splurge

In each of the cities we visited, we found one restaurant that we wanted to try out, it was our splurge dinner. In Athens, the splurge was less about the food and more about the view. We wanted to enjoy dinner and see the Acropolis lit up at night. We chose Couleur Locale, a fun restaurant and bar. The food and drinks were good with lots of options for everyone. We went a little earlier than most people go for dinner in Athens to get a great table with a view and had a leisurely meal as we watched the Acropolis light up. My only disclaimer is that it did get a little loud as they shifted to bar service in the evening.

A Few Favourites

While we ate out a fair bit in Athens, we opted for small cafes and restaurants serving the amazing flavours of Athens. We also did our best to sample gelato or ice cream as often as we could to stay cool.

  • Not Just Falafel was our first taste of the trip. We had a late dinner on a very hot evening, sitting outside enjoying some of the best falafel I have ever eaten. The staff were so friendly as our kids both asked for no tomato (in Greece no less) on their wraps. Our family of four ate wraps and drinks for under €20
  • Sugar Killer is just across from Not Just Falafel and the kids figured they still had room for an ice cream. Their 100% vegan desserts are all sugar-free and no one would ever know. I had to bargain for a bite as they told me I should have got my own
  • Couleur Locale is a great spot to watch the sunset and the Acropolis light up. This restaurant and bar has a few different levels so you can decide whether you want to be inside or out.
  • Iliada was so good we went back a second time. The owners were so kind and brought us fresh bougatsa at no charge after our meal. When we returned for takeout they gave us a plate of watermelon while we waited. Their menu was surprisingly large although we all had some version of a wrap (falafel or gyro). Their wraps all had French Fries inside them, genius. Everyone should make them this way, don’t you think?
  • We had both a homemade gelato spot – Cremino and Brew Str. Beer Shop in the bottom or our apartment building so we had to try these out when it got hot in the afternoon.

What’s in the grocery store?

Whenever we visit somewhere new, we love to check out the grocery store and see how it differs from our options at home. In Athens, our very generous Airbnb host stocked our apartment with so many staples we hardly needed a big grocery run. Instead, we stuck to the smaller convenience stores nearby for things like water and milk.

We had a few favourites that came from Athens. Everyone fell in love with bougatsa a crème filled flakey pastry. We tried it at a few different places and our favourite came from a little café called Iliada. We also loved the different savoury pies in the bakeries and often had these for lunch or a snack.
